To make their swinging parties even more happening, '60s fetishists the Lollipop Shoppe came up with the perfect shiny accessory for their groovy thrift-store dresses and go-go boots: a compilation CD. Lollipop gal DJ TigerBee, aka The Shapes' singer/bassist Patricia Rodriguez, recruited some of her favorite retro-rock acts—all Texan except New Mexico-based Dirty Novels—to feature on her collective's first benefit CD (proceeds benefit ... the Lollipop Shoppe!).

By Amanda Mann for QuickDFW The collective of local musicians, DJs, visual artists and go-go dancers will celebrate its sixth anniversary on Saturday, in an event dubbed a “Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus,” an homage to the Rolling Stones’ legendary party during its heyday. Think 1968, and a world where renting a tiger for Mick Jagger to ride during his grand entrance was not just a bad acid flashback, but someone’s actual job. So the scene at this circus should be a festive one. No tigers, but 100 percent more jugglers. The Lollipop Shoppe is known for its parties, having thrown such themed events as a second-chance prom, and nights dedicated to Hawaii Five-O and Soul Train. The circus theme inspired a cast of sideshow artists this time around, including a hula-hoop troupe demonstrating hip-shaking skills and a unicyclist navigating through the crowd. Watch out for the fire twirler, who will be spinning glowing poi. "We've been saving this theme for a big affair, and our sixth anniversary seemed a good time to do it," says co-creator Patricia Rodriguez (a.k.a. DJ Tiger Bee). Dallas Observer Best Of Dallas Awards
It's not every weekend you can paint your self gold and do "The Swim" on a go-go girl platform. But it is every eighth weekend. The Lollipop Shoppe is an every-other-month themed party usually held at the Avenue Arts Venue in Expo Park. Music (provided by resident DJs Panda Flower and Tiger Bee, guest DJs and live bands) and decorations are tailored to fit the motif, which has included Space Out, Beach Party or Spy Night. Costumes are encouraged; dancing is, too. And it's usually BYOB. That's six more excuses beyond Halloween to hit the thrift stores and costume shops. But you don't have to go all out to be part of the in crowd. Simply standing, watching and drinking is groovy, too.Thursday, May 17 2007

High school proms are tragic. The potential that something will go absurdly wrong is likely with teens amidst hormonal rage making sartorial decisions of taffeta and tails. Whether it was in the '70s or the '90s, those prom photos of yours will only raise eyebrows and suffer guffaws. Face it, retro is never in style when you actually lived through it. But a prom for your adult sensibilities could provide the vindication needed to escape that lingering humiliation of bad fashion and settled-for dates, not to mention for those who ended up staying home that long night.
The opportunity to conjure up a redemptive prom do-over sounds like a Fantasy Island episode. Fortunately, Dallas has its very own Mr. Rourke in the person of Patricia Rodriguez, who is half of the driving force behind local collective the Lollipop Shoppe, an outfit that proclaims itself "Dallas' Best '60s and Beyond Club." The Shoppe is joining forces with Mike Snider, the man behind the AllGood Café in Deep Ellum, to bring a second-chance prom to anybody and everybody, but especially to those who missed out the first time around.

Those groovy ‘60s revivalists at The Lollipop Shoppe always manage to capture the spirit of their happenings in their promotional artwork, and this week’s flyer for Saturday night’s Kaboom! at Space is no exception.
Ike and Tina certainly made their share of “Dancehall Fillers and Hot Pop Killers,” and nothing screams “Explosive Soul Funk” like Ike’s epic Afro, Black Power shirt and a middle finger aimed squarely at The Man. DJ Tigerbee, a.k.a. Patricia Rodriguez of The Shapes, chose a truly dynamite picture for this poster. --Jesse Hughey

Psych-rockers The Shapes, featuring Lollipop Shopper Patricia Rodriguez on bass and vocals, have finally started playing live shows again after a two-year hiatus, and will bring their '60s-loving jangle-rock to The Cavern Saturday night.
This poster for the show, which also features DJ Mark Ridlen and the live debut of A. Square, [who have a different poster, and a good one as well, here] seems to mine the same era as The Shapes. Maybe it's just me, but the way this photo of a forest is interspersed with images of tree rings and a woodgrain-paneled van reminds me of movie scenes shot in split-screen, a technique I associate with '60s movies like the Woodstock documentary. I also really love the bright yellow all over it, even though I've always thought of The Shapes as more of a black-and-white band.
